Thousands of Episcopalians from around the world will join together in Downtown Salt Lake City for the 78th Episcopal General Convention set for June 25 - July 3, 2015, at the Salt Palace Convention Center.
General Convention is the highest (earthly) authority in The Episcopal Church for legislation and governance. General Convention is held every three years and consists of two houses, the House of Deputies (laity and clergy) and the House of Bishops, which consider resolutions and conduct other business. As a democratic process, both houses must pass all legislation.
Of particular significance for General Convention 2015 is the election of the next Presiding Bishop by the House of Bishops. The election will take place in a closed session at the historic Cathedral Church of St. Mark. The initial General Convention, held in Philadelphia in 1785, consisted only of the House of Deputies. The House of Bishops was formed in 1789. The organizational structure of General Convention was modeled after the U.S. houses of Congress, and by many of the same founders. Today, General Convention is the second largest legislature in the world, surpassed only by the parliament of India.
